Title of Work: Tenderised Valentines and Evaporating Tangerines
Statement:
In my current body of work, Tenderised Valentines and Evaporating Tangerines, I examine the complexity of the domestic space. A constantly shifting environment filled with discomfort and uneasiness. I’ve always been interested in stories of haunted houses and possession and this idea that a home is a living thing. Something that is affected and connected to its inhabitants. I've been fixated on how a home functions as a highly intimate and private environment, as space where we are at our most vulnerable. Inside the work the house is personified, malignant and quiet. And its inhabitants are uncomfortable and alone. Trapped inside this house and leaving behind imprints and impressions of themselves. Creating this combined lived experience between them and the home.
This work consists of both poetry and photography to examine these intimate moments. The photography captures constructing still lives and re-enacted moments in the home. The poetry provides a connection to the exterior and a deeper relationship to the interior. The poems articulate ways that the home is a living thing, how it has a pulse and a backbone, and how it affects and connects to the people living inside of it. It gives context to what is happening outside of the photographs. Together the poetry and photography examine the feelings of presence, discomfort, and isolation inside the home space.

Biography:
Emilie Plunkett is a poet and photographer based in Chicago, their practice focuses on the domestic space and the mess, comfort and materiality of that intimate environment. They enjoy long walks by the lake, Alice Austen’s photographs and plums.
