Preface
In 2022, a lot of countries and regions around the world are still haunted by Covid-19. The pandemic has significantly changed peoples’ lives and minds.
This exhibition named “Every Moment Counts” is the second collaboration between Communication University of China and Columbia College Chicago since 2021. In contrast with the exhibition held last year which focused on “the isolation in space”, the theme this year concentrates on “time”, in which people are encouraged to capture and reflect on the significance of every moment of life.
Among these works, some reflect on the history, some focus on the reality, while some dream about the future. However, it seems that they are all characterized by a kind of floating and fluctuating feeling. Science and globalization provide people with convenience while also delivering them the uncertainty and insecurity of an unknown future. In addition to the “critique on technology”, “family relationships and belongingness” is another theme of this exhibition. The pandemic, though restricting people from long-distance travel, also enables us to reconnect with the present moment, in the process of which we could rediscover and reassess the relationship between ourselves and others.
In our society where scientific development coexists with the turbulence of life, photography could be regarded as a tool that reflects and rebalances people’s mind and body. It indicates human destiny, from which we could mirror ourselves. Admittedly, there are many fragmentations and conflicts that occur around the practice of photography, but it also provides people a shelter where they can dwell as the turmoil of our current lives continues.
