Preface
At the beginning of 2020, due to the pandemic, many pathways of natural collaboration have been reimagined. People’s understanding of distance has expanded in physical and psychological space as a response to the isolating effects of the pandemic.
This exhibition titled “ISOLATED” is the second collaboration between Communication University of China and Columbia College Chicago since 2019. This exhibition presents a collection of works created in response to the word isolated and the impact COVID-19 has had on the creative philosophies and lives of 10 photography students. This exhibition is a key element in both institutions’ collaborative efforts to learn more about each other’s pedagogical approaches and to build cultural understanding between the emerging photographers of China and the USA. It is an effort to remain connected through the process of creativity even in these times of global isolation.
We found that both the environmental protection, family relations and nostalgia that Chinese students pay attention to, and the identity, body and spirituality that American students explore, all focus on specific social situations and personal feelings, influenced by their own cultural and national experiences.
We can see that there are various types of “isolation” and cracks in our lives, whether caused by the pandemic or other factors. Through the personal monologues shared in this exhibition, we can begin to break down barriers, bridge differences, heal wounds, advance cultural understanding, and maintain spiritual contact.
